Personal Brand: A Beginners Guide

For this project, I worked with three other communication students to create an ebook about personal branding. This ebook breaks down what a personal brand is and how to have a good personal brand.

The primary objective of this project was to design an engaging ebook for LinkedIn promotion. With LinkedIn’s audience primarily consisting of professionals, we conducted thorough research and discovered the value of personal branding in career growth. From there, we developed an informative ebook that guides professionals through building a strong personal brand. This content was carefully crafted to resonate with our target audience and effectively align with the platform’s purpose.
Through this project, I developed skills in collaboration, research, and content creation. Working with my group to create an engaging ebook for LinkedIn taught me how to tailor messages to a professional audience and design content with purpose. I also learned how to communicate ideas clearly and work as a team to meet a shared goal. These skills will help me in the future as I create strategic content for different platforms and continue working on professional teams in the communication field.

Communication Intern
IU Indianapolis - Office of Student Employment
January 2024 - Present
During my junior and senior years, I had the wonderful opportunity to be the Communication Intern for the IU Indianapolis Office of Student Employment (OSE). This internship was very tech-heavy. I learned many new software, including CMS, Marketing Cloud, Web Content Management Systems (WCMS), Spotify for Podcasters, and more! In this position, I am responsible for creating monthly newsletters (OSE Column), updating and creating content for three websites, hosting a podcast (Learning and Earning Podcast), creating email campaigns, and helping with other promotional efforts.

Office of Student Employment's website.
The OSE Column
One of my primary responsibilities was planning and creating The OSE Column, the Office of Student Employment's monthly newsletter. This publication is distributed to over 3,000 students across the IU Indianapolis campus, providing essential announcements, a monthly featured topic, and details about campus events. Through this experience, I learned the importance of web writing structure: placing the most critical information at the top of the newsletter and gradually moving to less urgent content as the reader progresses. After over a year of crafting newsletters, I have developed valuable skills in tailoring messages to specific audiences.

Learning and Earning Podcast

I have had the amazing opportunity to host the Office of Student Employment's podcast, "The Learning and Earning Podcast." I wrote episodes, recorded interviews, edited episodes, and uploaded them to our podcast hosting software. Check out the Learning and Earning Podcast. Below are a few episodes I hosted!

OSE Website Management
another one of my main tasks was to update and maintain OSE three websites. Each of the wbsites were tailored to a different audience. The websites were for, students, supervisors and for supervisors looking to employ IU Indianapolis students. One of my biggest challenges was that I started my internship when the school was transition from IUPUI to IU and Purdue Indianapolis. I become in charge of rebranding all website content from IUPUI to IU Indianapolis.
This process included:
-
changing all web pages to say IU indianapolis.
-
update documents and surveys that had IUPUI branding on it.
-
retaking photos on the website that had the word "IUPUI" in them.
-
Work with univeristy to ensure all updates are aligned with the IU Indianapolis brand.

Currently, the Office of student employment has three websites with the goal to only have two. I have been helping assist with the planning of the two new websites.

Overall, this internship has equipped me with the knowledge, hands-on experience, and communication skills I need to succeed in my future career. As someone who aspires to be a Communication Coordinator, this role provided me an introduction in strategic messaging, content creation, and digital communication.
I had the opportunity to take ownership of important projects, including managing newsletters, producing podcast episodes, updating websites, and leading rebranding efforts during the university’s transition to IU Indianapolis. These experiences taught me how to tailor messages for different audiences, adapt to new technologies, and think critically about how communication can support organizational goals. Working closely my supervisor and fellow interns helped me grow both professionally and personally. I developed leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration skills that I will carry with me into future roles. Most importantly, this internship confirmed my passion for using communication to inform, connect, and make a meaningful impact, and I’m excited to continue doing so in my career.

COMM G400
Communication Capstone
ACP Project

In my Senior Capstone class, we were assigned an Applied Communication Project to demonstrate what we’ve learned throughout our time as communication majors. The goal was to show how communication theories and principles can be applied to real-world problems and to help us articulate our skills and knowledge. Our class chose the topic of Artificial
Intelligence, and we were placed into groups to develop an intervention project for the semester.
My group focused on researching how AI is currently impacting different industries. Together, we created an Instagram campaign that highlighted both the positive and negative effects of AI across six key industries: Healthcare, Business, Creative Arts, Journalism, Technology, and Law. Our campaign aimed to inform professionals about the potential risks of AI in their fields while promoting its ethical and responsible use. Rather than discouraging AI adoption, our goal was to encourage integration by raising awareness of its challenges and encouraging ethical use.

The campaign ran for two weeks, and each post dedicated to a different industry.

Through this project, I significantly strengthened my teamwork and communication skills. With many different components to manage, we had to collaborate effectively throughout the semester. This experience taught me how to take on leadership roles, distribute responsibilities, and clearly communicate tasks among team members. More importantly, it helped me see the real-world impact communication can have by demonstrating how applying communication theories and strategies can educate and influence our community, especially on complex topics like AI.
